Eligibility
To be eligible for a course in biology, be it an undergraduate course, masters program or a PhD degree, an individual will have to hail from a science background. Going into the specifics, to be eligible for a bachelors program in biology, a student will have to be done with a 10+2 or an equivalent with the sciences as his/her core subjects. To be eligible for a masters program in biology, ideally a student will have to have under his/her a belt a bachelors degree in biology. To be eligible for a masters program or a doctoral degree in biology, a student will have to be done with a masters program that permits him/her to take up a PhD in biology.
Course Details
Courses in biology will give importance to introducing students to the subject and will step it up a notch from there. The course will aim to educate students on experimental biology, genetics, cell biology, biological chemistry, principles of human disease, molecular biology, cellular biology, and developmental biology. Courses will also give importance to bioengineering, biochemistry, structures, and functions of the nucleus, genetics, photosynthesis, systems biology, biocatalysts, protein engineering, etc. Courses in biology will vary from university to university and in levels of difficulty, but the core objective of encouraging students to gain as much knowledge as possible will remain the same.
Specialization
A biology student can aim to specialize in either one of the many options:
- Biochemistry
- Biophysics
- Bioengineering
- Molecular biology
- Bioinformatics
- Ecology and conservation biology
- Genetics
- Marine biology
Individuals with a degree in biology, valuable knowledge on the subject and experience in the field will find it easy to bag a job. Job opportunities may vary from a job as a research scientist in the field of life sciences to a research scientist in the field of medicine. Biologists will also be able to find jobs as pharmacologists, soil scientists, clinical molecular geneticists, secondary school teachers, nature conservation officers, etc. Apart from these conventional career options, students or individuals depending on their levels of interest in their chosen field can also branch out unconventional career options in biology.
